Plant Medicines

The Soil

The soil types vary a lot and are generally of poor quality in the Amazon so we make every effort to improve its quality. No petro/agrichemicals are used anywhere on site. We use chicken manure, powdered Andean rock salt, some Terra preta, kitchen waste either directly or after composting, humanure from the dry toilets and composted water plants, leaves and rotted softwood.

There are many acres of farmland, mainly spread along the river but also going inland. The whole site is about 300 acres and approximately 60 acres will eventually be used for food production. The older rainforest is sacrosanct and left alone for nature to do its thing.

The Edible and Medicinal Plants - though all food has some medicinal qualities.

Fruit - with local / Spanish names in brackets.

The fruits will normally be harvested either the same day or the day before, so they have maximum flavour, vital energy and therefore health giving properties.

Banana trees - several  hundred -  five different species.
The most prevalent is called The Manzana (meaning apple ) which has a delicious  sweet flavour and its trunk water is highly medicinal and closely related to the Indian species which is used in Ayurvedic Medicine . The other species range from the savory Platano delicious fried) to Bellaco, Capirona, Seda and the very sweet and tiny Pildora (or Guineo).

We will show you how the Banana trees are grown and harvested. It's really interesting if it's new to you.
